book 1
Matthias, a young mouse of the peaceful Redwall Abbey, is in trouble, as are the rest of the inhabitants of Redwall. After marauding brute Cluny the Scourge attacks Redwall with his horde, Matthias embarks on a quest to retrieve the legendary sword of Abbey founder, defender, and hero Martin the Warrior, which he believes will provide victory over the evil vermin. Methuselah, the Abbey gatekeeper, finds a riddle behind the tapestry of Martin, which directs the two mice to the warrior's secret tomb, where his shield and sword belt are located.
In the meantime, Cluny schemes to take Redwall. He directs a horde member to steal Martin's tapestry from inside Great Hall in an effort to reduce Abbey morale.
Another rhyme instructs Matthias to place Martin's shield above the Gatehouse. At night, it reflects moonlight up onto the weathervane. The mice enlist the help of Jess Squirrel to scale the Abbey and retrieve the sword, however, she is attacked by the Sparra, birds who reside on the Abbey roof. The young Warbeak is taken captive, and Methuselah tricks her into revealing that her leader, King Bull Sparra, possessed the great sword. Matthias and Warbeak visit the loft, but the dangerous king refuses to let Matthias go when he learns the sword is now owned by an adder, Asmodeus. Warbeak and her mother protect Matthias and the two young creatures become friends. Matthias attempts to escape, but plunges into the Abbey pond, along with Bull Sparra. The fall was fatal for the menacing sparrow monarch.
Local healer foxes Sela and her son, Chickenhound, were in Cluny's employ until he ordered them executed for treachery. Sela was killed, but Chickenhound survived to pillage the Abbey. When Methuselah bravely attempted to stop his thieving, Chickenhound hit him with a sack filled with valuables, accidentally killing the frail old mouse, and fled into Mossflower Woods, where he encountered Asmodeus and was bitten. Jess and Basil Stag Hare were able to retrieve the tapestry and place it in its rightful location in Great Hall.
Matthias recovers and sets out to defeat Asmodeus and reclaim the sword. He is assisted by the argumentative Guerilla Union of Shrews in Mossflower, Log-a-Log, and the president of the "shrew union", Guosim. They direct him to wildcat Squire Julian Gingivere, who is feuding with owl Captain Snow. Matthias meets with Snow, using a token from Basil as his protection, and strikes a deal: if he can regain the sword, Snow will never eat another mouse or shrew, and he will reconcile with Julian. Matthias tracks Asmodeus to his lair in the Quarry and beheads the adder. Matthias is ultimately successful and finds the sword, although Guosim is killed by Asmodeus.
He then returns to the Abbey, which has been captured by Cluny in his absence. With the help of the shrews and Warbeak's Sparra, he's able to launch an attack and fights Cluny in the Bell Tower. Matthias slices the Joseph Bell from its rope after Friar Hugo is caught while hiding under the stairs, and it falls, killing Cluny. Abbot Mortimer dies shortly thereafter, as Cluny had lashed the mouse with his poisoned tail barb.
Matthias marries Cornflower, and they have a son, Mattimeo. Brother Mordalfus becomes Abbot.

book 3
Exactly eight seasons after the events of Redwall, Matthias and Cornflower have a son named Mattimeo who has been spoiled by all the Redwall Abbey residents since his birth. Mattimeo fights with the young and obnoxious rat Vitch and receives punishment so that he may learn his responsibilities. Meanwhile, the masked fox Slagar the Cruel and his gang of slavers plan to sneak into the Abbey during the Midsummer Feast. Unbeknownst to the Abbey dwellers, Slagar uses Vitch as a spy in order to obtain important information about the activities of the feast. Slagar and his gang thus manage to gain entrance to the Abbey by pretending to be a traveling circus. During their performance, they slip a sleeping draught into the drinks and ask everybody to drink a toast.
After drugging the Abbey residents, Slagar kidnaps Mattimeo, Tim and Tess Churchmouse, Cynthia Bankvole, and Sam Squirrel. The only witnesses to the event are Friar Hugo, Lettie Bankvole, and John Churchmouse, who decided not to participate in the toast. Lettie and Hugo are murdered while trying to stop Slagar's gang. John survives, but is left in critical condition from a deep wound.
The next morning, pouring rain awakens the Redwallers as they slowly recover from the effect of the drug. Upon discovering the missing Dibbuns, Matthias, Basil Stag Hare, and Jess Squirrel leave the Abbey to hunt down Slagar and return the young creatures back to their parents. They follow a fake trail, intentionally left by Slagar's gang, and, in the process, meet a young otter named Cheek.
The kidnapped young ones learn that they have been chained inside Saint Ninian's Church. They meet Auma, a young badger maid, who had been captured earlier. The slave gang and the slaves start their long journey towards the underground kingdom of Malkariss, though the slaves don't know their destination.
During their journey, Basil, Matthias, and Jess join up with Orlando the Axe, the father of Auma, and Jabez Stump, the father of a young hedgehog named Jube. Jabez, Orlando, and Jabez's daughters initially fight with one another, as the hedgehogs think that Orlando kidnapped Jube. They quickly realize that Slagar had captured their children. As the hunt continues, they team up with the Guerilla Union of Shrews in Mossflower who agree to assist them on their quest.
The Father Abbot of Redwall, Abbot Mordalfus, has a dream, during which Martin the Warrior speaks the mysterious words: "Where the Little Folk Go". In the morning, Redwallers start solving the riddle and eventually it leads them under the Abbey to an abandoned chamber where Abbess Germaine's grave is located. There, they find a green plate that contains Loamscript, which only John Churchmouse can translate. The message of the riddle is found on the roof of Redwall and it contains information which is important for the questors. The Redwallers send Queen Warbeak and her warriors to carry the message for Matthias, Jess, and Basil.
The slaves meet Jube, Jabez's son. Jube seems to be confident that his father will rescue him soon. As the slave gang travels onward, Mattimeo and his friends try to escape, but they fail and are recaptured again.
Meanwhile, back at Redwall, an army of rooks, crows, magpies, and ravens, led by the raven General Ironbeak, have taken the Abbey under siege, conquering it from the top down and killing all the sparrows who have not left to assist Matthias. The Abbey dwellers seal themselves in the large dining room, Cavern Hole, and harass the birds by making them believe the Abbey is haunted by a ghost. As the siege drags on, a large, badly injured redkite named Stryk manages to fly to the Abbey, and is rescued from the rooks by Constance. Eventually, Ironbeak manages to infiltrate Cavern Hole, but a healed Stryk attacks and kills him.
After a long journey climbing up cliffs, fighting a horde of archer rats, and crossing a desert, Matthias' gang finally arrives at the Kingdom of Malkariss, where Slagar has been trading his slaves and Vitch. There, the heroes fight the massive army of rats and Matthias challenges the infamous Wearet. During the duel, Matthias falls into the Abyss and meets Malkariss by accident. Malkariss, the old and shriveled polecat, is killed by the slaves with stones, and Matthias frees them, reuniting with his son. Having destroyed the kingdom, the now liberated army of slaves starts to leave the area when suddenly Slagar appears, striking Matthias in the head, then disappearing into a secret exit. Vitch has also survived the destruction of Malkariss, but Slagar kills him with his trusted weapon. Matthias and Orlando give chase and Slagar runs from them, but then falls into an old well and dies. The party returns triumphantly to the Abbey and there is peace once again in Mossflower.
Tim Churchmouse becomes the official recorder of Redwall. Mattimeo becomes Abbey Warrior and marries Tess Churchmouse. They have a son and call him Martin II after Martin the Warrior. Father Abbot declared the season Autumn of the Warriors' Return.
